Another paradoxical reaction to Benedryl

by Bo Morrison
(Columbus Ohio)

I've been having allergy issues lately so I'd take two to three benedryl tablets to help allievate the allergies and to help me fall asleep but lately they've been having the opposite effect.

My allergies get worse and then I get more restless than I ever have been before. I am so tired I can't hold my eyes open but only get whats called "micro sleep;" that is when a person falls asleep for only seconds at a time.

What is the recommended treatment to counter this considering that benedryl is EXACTLY what is given to people with a paradoxical reaction?!?!

Magnesium...

Hi Bo,

If you have problems sleeping, then it's almost certain that this is one Sign of Magnesium Deficiency. Taking magnesium, as I outline on the Magnesium Dosage page can help significantly with sleeping problems without having to resort to prescription medications.

Taking Melatonin for Sleep is another possible solution as well. You can safely take both magnesium and melatonin, just start out taking only one at a time in order to judge any reactions that you may have to either one.
